Untitled 2017

September

This piece was initially meant to explore the concept of placing the viewer into a state of discomfort using visual triggers. I started thinking about our relationships with various bodily fluids, in particular, menstrual blood. However, through the process of experimentation, the focus behind the work shifted from what I was originally intending to a form of a feminist statement. By depicting Sojourner Truth, one of the first activist for the rights of women (and slaves) in the colours associated with menstruation, on sanitary pads, I wanted to discuss how women should and already are standing up to an outdated patriarchal concept that menstruation is shameful and shouldn't be publically discussed.
